I had a decent showing at the Steel Ring in Třinec for the second round of the FIA European Karting Championship. I knew we had the speed in practice, especially when it was dry, and we knew we’d fair better if it rained during the RGMMC round.
Qualifying was ok, I placed P3 in my group. I felt I could have put a better lap together, but I could fight from P9. I started P3 or P4 in the qualifying heats. The Steel Ring is a technical track so I knew I would go well, but it also has limited overtaking places. The pole side did not offer as much advantage as some of the other tracks we visited, but it was really important to get a good start.
Once the race got going, it was about being calm on the tires and managing the race. I finished in the top 4 in every heat, placing me P7 out of 77 drivers by the end of the qualifying heats.
I started Super Heat A in P4. I didn’t have the pace to challenge. However, I knew I just had to bring it home to maintain my final starting position. I finished P5.
I started the final in P7. An hour before the race, the sky turned dark, and it started to rain lightly. Just before the final, the sun came out! The start went well, I maintained my position and got my head down for the next 21 laps. A few laps in I caught and passed my team mate. I tried to catch my friend Dries, but at this track, the kart doesn’t work as well when you get close to another driver, which makes it even harder to pass. Dries doesn’t make mistakes and we kept matching lap times. In fact, nobody at the front made mistakes, which shows the quality of the FIA European Championship. I finished P6.
I’m happy with my results. I’m just relieved to be competitive after my broken wrist. I’m excited for the next round at Rodby in Denmark.
