With 128 drivers, from 55 countries, the fifth round of the RGMMC Champions of the Future was a big event, as teams and drivers prepare for Octobers FIA World Championship.
Through practice we knew we had a fast kart and I put it to good use. In qualifying I put the kart P1 in my qualifying group, which was P4 overall. This put me on the front row in each of my seven heats in group D.
On Thursday afternoon I raced in three heats. I started P2 in the first and P1 in the next two.
In the first heat Heat C-D, I started P2 and at the start I fell back to P4, but I had decent pace and drove back to 2nd. In my second heat, Heat D-E, I started on Pole. I tried to get away but was passed on the opening lap and I was unable to keep up with the leader and finished P2.
In my final heat of the day, Heat D-F I started on Pole, I lead until lap 4 and was then shuffled back to P4. I got back to third and crossed the line P4.
Friday saw us wrap up the last four qualifying heats.
In my first heat of the day I started Heat D-H in P1, I got a clean start and was able to pull out a 1.1 second lead, while the pack behind fought for a few laps. When they calmed down they caught me. I had to defend on my last lap, but I bought it back for my first heat win of the weekend.
Heat D-G was a battle. I struggled to get away at the start. I fell back into the pack and battled to finish P4.
In Heat B-D, I started P2. I had a bad start falling to P7. By lap 4 I was in P11. I made my way to P7, but ended up a disappointing P9.
In my final heat, Heat A-D I made a great start and stayed in P2. I battled for the lead but settled for P2 since it gave me a better starting position for the pre-final.
After all the qualifying heats I was P5 overall.
I therefore started pre-final A in P3. Pre-final A started off well. I got to the lead, but I tried to hang on the outside while being passed and was punished. I went off and fell to P10. I climbed back to P8, with the fastest lap.
After the Pre-final I placed P6 for the final.
An outside start saw me fall to P9 at the start. I knew I was fast and set two purple sectors. On lap two I caught a driver ahead which slowed my progress, a driver behind my kart and ended my race, breaking my kart and ending my race.
Racing is a tough sport sometimes. While I’m devastated with the result, I’m grateful for the progress and hard work that the whole team put into give me a great kart. We leave Franciacorta knowing we have the pace to run at the front when we come back for the FIA World Championships.
A massive thank you to everyone at Parolin Racing, my mechanic Mirco, my coach Lorenzo and all the lads at GFR!
